Old medical books and encyclopedias are material for my work. The photographs in these books often portray young, naked women. In most cases, the women’s eyes have been covered to protect their anonymity. Or could it be done for the viewer – maybe he does not want to face the women’s eyes, to be looked back at?
For me, these women are not ill; I do not see them as patients. Throughout history, scientists have tried to define woman and to control her sexuality, but these seven women have turned their back to the viewer. They stand together, strong, and refuse to return the gaze.
