I use old medical books and encyclopedias as material for my work. The photographs in these books often portray young women without any clothes, even when there would seem to be no apparent medical reason for it.
For me, these women are not ill; I do not see them as patients. Throughout history, scientists and society have tried to define woman and to control her sexuality. These women have turned their back to the viewer, to all of us. They stand together, strong, and refuse to return the gaze.
